Looks - The Canon ImageClass MF 3110 copier printer is smaller than most multi-function devices. However the device footprint may be a little more than preferred in an area with limited space measuring at 14.5x18x18 inches and weighing a rather bulky 26.5 pounds. Overall design is sleek with modern colour choices.
Controls - This multi-function device is very smart not to mention stylish and modern. Even new printer or computer users will find the controls easy to understand due to it's straight forward format. Control buttons are large and clearly marked. Stop, reset, start and numeric buttons are located on the front of the machine, close to each other. Smack in the middle of the panel a LCD screen can be found. Arrow and plus minus marked characters assist scrolling up and down the menu's. Red and green lights warn of paper jams as well as copying and job saving status. Copying and scanning is shown by 2 large green lights. 4 Blue buttons select exposure, image sizing, print and copy quality and collating options.
Quality and handling - The device is very fussy in terms of paper types and sizes. Only accepting plain paper and envelope types as well as A4, legal and letter sizes. Prints are produced at maximum resolutions of 1200x600 dpi. Quality in general is notch above average. Characters are faint and rather difficult to read. Smudging may also be present. Photo print quality is below average on the edge of poor. Posterization, dithering and straight edge aliasing are common problems encountered. Scans can be faint and blurred.
Engine speeds - The printers' engine can reach magnificent speeds, probably why the machine boasts with top ranking as one of the fasted multi function device in it's class. Text is produced at 14.3 ppm and graphics and photo's at 15.4 ppm. Scanning is a little slower at 3.7 ppm for colour and greyscale docs. Copies are produced at speed of 21 ppm and have enlargement options up to 200% and reduction as low as 50%.
Drivers - Drivers and Software included on your accompanying CD-ROM is limited in terms of only being compatible with Windows OS. Systems totally incompatible with the printer are Apple Macintosh and Linux. A scanner management software package is included in your software. Overall installation and setup is a dream with all systems go upon completion of the setup process.
Connectivity - Fast USB connectivity comes standard with the printer. Unfortunately parallel port connections are so outdated and where not even considered by designers for inclusion. The printer is only compatible with Windows OS's. Apple and Linux users will be disappointed by their operators' exclusion Great software, drivers and utilities come standard with your investment.
